Fred Brander

Founder and Proprietor of Brander Vineyard

Fred Brander, founder and proprietor of Brander Vineyard, is one of Santa Barbara County’s most influential wine pioneers. Born in Argentina with a Swedish background, Fred’s international roots and early passion for wine led him to California, where he established Brander Vineyard in 1975 in the heart of what is now the Los Olivos District.

Often referred to as “the King of Sauvignon Blanc,” Fred helped define Santa Barbara County’s identity through his focus on Bordeaux-style wines. He was also among the earliest to plant Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon in the region, setting new benchmarks that helped shape the area’s emerging wine style.

Throughout the early growth of Santa Barbara County’s wine industry, Fred played a key role in mentoring and collaborating with a new generation of winemakers, many of whom went on to become leaders in the region.

As Brander Vineyard celebrates its 50th anniversary, Fred’s legacy reflects five decades of innovation, sustainable farming, and unwavering dedication to elevating the region’s global reputation. He continues to guide the estate and serve as an enduring ambassador for Santa Barbara County wine.
