Soltopia: An insider look at the college festival built from the ground-up in 86 Days

In early January of this year, the infamous unsanctioned UCSB block party known as Deltopia was effectively canceled by the County when they placed a 72-hour noise ordinance over the April weekend, citing preventable medical emergencies and the major strain on county resources. Once the ordinance had been confirmed, Isla Vista Community Service District (IVCSD) Community Programs Director Myah Mashhadialireza took action on the necessary steps to “save the music”, and reached out to me with her idea for a takeover of the Pardall Road Loop, called Soltopia.

With six stages, multiple vendors, a full-service biergarten, and plans to provide harm reduction infrastructure for over ten thousand students, I was cautiously optimistic considering the ~90 day timeframe. A brand new festival, and an undertaking for the students of Isla Vista, born out of the constraints placed by the generations that came before; it was more than ambitious.

After weeks of planning, meetings on top of meetings, my team and I had finally reached that fateful first week of the spring quarter. The anticipation was palpable as we entered the home stretch, meeting and working together nearly every day to see through the vision in our minds.

And guess what? Spoiler Alert: It Worked.

What lay at the forefront of our M.O. was simple: create a live music experience that students could enjoy, and keep everyone safe while they enjoyed it. Students enjoyed cheap beers at the Chilla Vista Beergarden, and packed shoulder to shoulder for bands at the Roadhouse stage. They would rush up to Pardall Road to dance with local favorite DJs at Cantina Del Sol, or a performance from special guest Nikko at the Sandpit.

When it came to harm reduction, we left nothing off the table. We had organized to provide free food for students from 10+ vendors throughout the day, and 5 water stations where nearly 100 volunteers passed out over 10 metric tons of water. The results were staggering  as medical emergencies in the town had dropped 94 percent compared to last year, and no arrests were made within festival grounds.

Was it perfect? No. Was it a proof of concept? Absolutely. For a town that had long been defined by the infamous Deltopia weekend, Soltopia stands as a testament to the future, of what this community can build when it comes together. No matter the obstacles placed in front of us, the spirit of Isla Vista finds a way of persisting. Between the nine leaders that came together, and the crowd of over 12,000 people, that spirit was alive, and it was strong.
